Fujian · Chongyang & Nine-Bend River

Wuyishan

Thirty-six Danxia crags flank the twisting Nine-Bend Stream, while cliffside tea gardens bake tea leaves to yield lingering floral and mineral depth.

Mount Wuyi rises as a dramatic Danxia terrain draped in subtropical virgin rainforest, where the jade waters of Nine-Bend Stream coil around thirty-six crimson sandstone peaks. Downriver punters steer slender bamboo rafts between upright towers of stone, floating beneath cliffside boat coffins and secluded Daoist retreats. In the sheltered ravines known as the Three Gorges and Two Brooks, tea bushes take root in decomposed gravel soil, feeding on morning mist and diffused mountain light. Hand-kneaded and slow-roasted over charcoal ashes, Wuyi rock tea captures an earthy, persistent mineral resonance prized throughout Chinese tea culture.

Niulankeng Cliffside Terraces and Charcoal Roasting

Entering the Niulankeng ravine at dawn, sheer Danxia cliffs block harsh sunbeams, maintaining a cool, humid microclimate. Seep water dripping down rock fissures carries potassium and silica into soil formed from weathered red sandstone gravel. Tea bushes of Rougui and Dahongpao sink deep roots into rock fractures, yielding thick, leathery leaves. Following solar withering, wave tossing, and hand twisting, the leaves enter bamboo roasting baskets. Tea masters bury longan charcoal embers under a calculated blanket of pale ash, roasting the leaves at moderate heat for up to fifteen hours. The resulting deep-amber liquor displays immediate floral fragrance followed by an enduring mineral sweetness.

Bamboo Rafts Navigating Nine-Bend Stream Ravines

Twisting over ten kilometers, the Nine-Bend Stream curls around nine monumental meanders among sandstone towers. Traditional rafts consist of broad bamboo poles heat-bent at the bow, creating a buoyant flat craft that skims shallow stone shoals. Punters stand at the bow wielding long bamboo poles, pushing against submerged boulders to steer through rushing white water. Floating from the Ninth to the First Bend, monumental cliffs slide by: the elegant column of Jade Maiden Peak, the upright bastion of Great King Peak, and mysterious three-thousand-year-old boat coffins perched on cliff ledges. Crystal waters mirror crimson stone and green bamboo in a timeless scroll.

Subtropical Forest Valleys and Cliff Hermitages

Beyond the frequented waterways, Mount Wuyi National Park encompasses one of the world's best-preserved subtropical virgin evergreen forests. Massive broadleaf canopies reach fifty meters into the sky, draped in wild vines and native epiphytic orchids rooted in damp moss. High waterfalls plunge hundreds of meters down granite clefts, filling the air with mist. Since the Jin and Tang dynasties, these sheer ravines have attracted hermits and Daoist monks seeking seclusion. Shrines like Zhizhi Hermitage cling directly to vertical cliff ledges, surrounded by trackless woodlands that preserve an untouched natural equilibrium.
