The Art of Woven Bamboo

Hard green outer bark forms the ribs; soft inner grain splits into supple strands. Weavers guide paper-thin bamboo splints through interlocking patterns to create vessels durable enough to hold grain and liquid.

The question

How do artisans transform rigid culms of bamboo into waterproof, flexible domestic vessels?

Bamboo fiber combines tensile strength with flexibility. Splitting, shaving, and paring culms into silky strands allows interlocking weaving patterns that distribute strain, yielding vessels lighter and more resilient than timber.

A bamboo basket usually outlives plastic and outlasts wood, and when it fails it can be repaired: pull the broken splint, weave in another.

That is why it is still in use. Not because it is handsome, but because it is mendable.

    Qingshen

Qingshen weaving produces pictures, because the splints are taken down to a fraction of a millimetre and let light through.

Holding together at that thickness is the margin bamboo fibre gives you. Most materials have already failed there.

    Shengzhou

Shengzhou baskets and mats use two splints in one object: green for the edge, yellow for the face.

The split is not fussiness, it is load: the edge takes abrasion, the face has to lie flat.

    Anji

Anji bamboo regrows to a usable stand in three years, which is why the work here went to volume.

A short rotation makes the material cheap, and cheap material pushes a craft toward board and batch rather than fine weaving.
